History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day has many different adaptations going back to ancient times.  Officially it became a U.S. holiday in 1914 and was created by Anna Jarvis.  However, it was Anna Jarvis’s mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who planted the seeds for this day when she started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” during the Civil War era.  Ironically, Anna Jarvis would come to denounce Mother’s Day due to the commercialization of the holiday and even attempted to have it removed as a holiday until her death in 1948.
