Military Separation Codes

Updated: November 2, 2022
In this Article

Military Separation Codes Military Separation Codes are on form DD214 and categorize hundreds of reasons for a veteran’s separation from the military. Veterans are often unaware as to what these secret codes mean but they can be accessed by employers who want them for use in screening prospective employees. Officially, the Department of Defense no longer allows the military to release the definitions to the public, but they are still widely available.

Separation Codes are also known as SPN Codes, Spin Codes, Discharge Codes, Separation Program Designator (SPD) Codes and Separation Program Numbers (SPNs).

Where to find the Separation Code on a DD214

The Separation Code can be found in Box 26 of the long form DD214.

    Military Separation Codes – Alphabetical

Use of these codes is at your own risk. The DoD no longer allows the release of the meanings of SPN Codes, and these were obtained prior to the military discontinuing the public release of Separation Codes/SPN codes. It is also possible that new codes can be assigned or existing codes are subject to change.

Numeric SPN Codes can be found here.
